The Scoreboard We Live By
We live in a world that is very good at keeping score. Followers, titles, achievements, income, accolades. The metrics are everywhere, and they are relentless. And somewhere along the way, most of us absorbed the message that our value is tied to our numbers.
I have been in rooms where women with extraordinary accomplishments still felt like they weren’t enough. I have watched people chase the next milestone, certain that this one, this title, this recognition, this moment, would finally make them feel worthy. And I have seen the quiet devastation when it doesn’t.
The scoreboard is a lie. Not because achievement doesn’t matter. It does. But because achievement was never meant to be the source of your worth.
Your worth is not something you earn. It is something you remember.
The Problem with Earning It
When you believe your worth must be earned, you are always one bad day away from losing it. One rejection, one failure, one moment of not measuring up and suddenly the foundation shifts. That is not a stable place to build a life from.
I have been there. I know what it feels like to tie your sense of self to an outcome, and then have that outcome not go the way you hoped. The crash is real. And the recovery is harder than it needs to be, because you are not just processing disappointment. You are rebuilding your entire sense of who you are.
There is a better way. But it requires a fundamental shift in how you understand worth. Not as something you accumulate, but as something you already have.
Remembering, Not Earning
Self-worth is not a trophy. It is not awarded at the end of a competition or handed to you when you finally hit a milestone. It is something that was always yours, something you were born with, that the world has spent years trying to convince you to doubt.
The work is not to earn it. The work is to remember it. To peel back the layers of comparison and criticism and conditional love until you find the thing underneath that was never in question. Your inherent value as a human being.
That is the message I come back to again and again, in my book, in my speaking, in every conversation I have with women who are trying to find their footing. You are not behind. You are not less than. You are not waiting to become worthy. You already are.
You are not waiting to become worthy. You already are.
A Different Measure
I am not suggesting you stop pursuing goals or stop caring about excellence. I am suggesting you decouple those things from your sense of self. Pursue the goal because it matters to you, because it aligns with your purpose, because it is an expression of who you are. Not because you need it to prove you are enough.
When you operate from that place, everything changes. You take risks more freely. You recover from setbacks more quickly. You celebrate other people’s wins without feeling diminished by them. You show up more fully, because you are not spending half your energy managing your own insecurity.
That is the life that becomes available when you stop treating your worth like a trophy to be won. It was never a competition. It was always already yours.
